Chez Thrift - BIN there, done
that!

Put yourselves in the place
of our staff and volunteers for a day and imagine what it takes to deal with
scenes such as the one in this picture. This is what is faces them almost
everyday at the back of Chez Thrift .
Chez Thrift does not accept
furniture. The bed chesterfield pictured is extremely heavy, and now wet from
the snow which fell that night. It is now garbage. In order for it to get to the
garbage we must pay someone to drag it a considerable distance to the garbage
bin area and wait for a large item pick up or to physically lift and remove it
and take it to be dumped, risking injury and sometimes incurring the costs of a
rental truck. Large boxes of clothing etc. that are left in the elements, no
matter how wonderful they were when dropped off, most often get wet. The box
pictured was far too heavy for the volunteers to lift and broke apart when
moved. By the time it was emptied the items were damp or wet and mostly useless.
The majority of volunteers at Chez Thrift are women and seniors. Would you want
your mom or grandmother to have to move a bed chesterfield or large heavy boxes
and broken items just to be able to get in the door to volunteer? Would you want
to do it?
Items which are left on the
ground outside the stores and the bins are actually considered ‘dumping’. The
Town of Caledon By-Law #87100 prohibits dumping and comes with a fine of up to
$2000.
While most donations are
well intentioned, we have seen a striking increase in the dumping of damaged,
dirty, broken items and actual garbage at all of our locations. Due to this
increase by a few thoughtless individuals, CCS has to take on substantially
increased costs in garbage removal, video surveillance and bin maintenance.
Chez Thrift
donation bin is for bagged clothing only. The bin is located at the in the parking area at the back of Chez Thrift. All other items must be brought in during business hours so they can
be taken directly inside.
For large items, The
ReUstore is the place to go at 109 Industrial Rd. from Tuesday to Saturday
8:30am to 4:30pm.
